Martin Birrane, Executive Chairman
Martin Birrane began his career in property in Canada in 1960 which continued when he moved to the UK and founded, bought and sold a variety of businesses.
He left estate agency in 1968 to concentrate on property development and project management. In 1983 he acquired a major shareholding and became Chairman and Managing Director of Peer Properties Limited when the company had net assets of £283,000. Under his direction, the company, later to be renamed Peer Group plc, has grown considerably and now has current assets of £160 million.
Martin’s passion for 50 years has been motor racing. He competed at Le Mans on ten occasions where his best result was a class win in 1985 in a BMW M1 Procar. In the early 1990’s he was the first non-American to own a Nascar team.
In 1997 he bought the world renowned business of Lola and then rebuilt the company, diversifying into new areas of business including Aerospace, Defence, Renewables, Automotive, Communications and Motorsport.
In 1986 he purchased Mondello Park Motor Racing Circuit in County Kildare, Ireland. He has invested heavily in the venue and today it is the only permanent motor racing circuit in the Republic of Ireland which retains an FIA Licence.
Howard joined the Board of Peer Group plc in May 1997. He Started his career in the Estates Department of the Prudential Assurance Company in 1976. After qualifying as a Chartered Surveyor he specialised in investment matters and became particularly involved in the development and application of discounted cashflow appraisal techniques. He left the Prudential in 1994 where he had been responsible for the Central London investment portfolios. Between 1994 and 1997 Howard was a Partner at Grimley International Property Advisers here he established the Fund Management Department, offering strategic property investment services to clients.
As Managing Director of Peer Group plc, Howard is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Company but has a “hands on” approach to asset management and investment. He is also a Director of Lola Group Holdings Limited and Mondello Park Limited.
Richard joined Peer Group in August 2013 and was appointed to the Board of Directors on 2nd January 2014. He started his career in public practice in Leicestershire where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant before moving to Dixon Wilson Chartered Accountants in the City of London. Richard joined Grosvenor Estates in 1998 where he spent 13 years in real estate development finance, latterly as finance director of its UK development business, and has dealt with over £2bn of property transactions throughout his career. As Finance Director of Peer Group, Richard is responsible for all financial management and reporting.
Michael is a Solicitor (England and Wales) qualifying in 1977. He worked in private practice for many years, latterly in the company commercial, business law fields and formerly in the commercial property arena. He joined Peer Group in April 2013, became Secretary of the various Group companies in September 2013 and Director in January 2014. Michael leads the Legal and Company Secretarial function for Peer Group.
